Youkilis' sac fly lifts Red Sox over Rangers in 11th

07/17/2010 - Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kevin Youkilis' sacrifice fly in the 11th inning gave the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers in the third contest of a four-game set from Fenway Park.

With Alexi Ogando (3-1) on the mound, Marco Scutaro led off the 11th with a walk. Darnell McDonald then laid down a bunt that Ogando fielded, but his rushed throw to second went off of Scutaro and into the outfield, putting runners at second and third. After an intentional walk to David Ortiz, Darren O'Day took the mound, and Youkilis lofted a fly ball to center that allowed Scutaro to score with ease for the win.

Youkilis went 2-for-4 and tied the game in the ninth with an RBI double, while Ortiz drove in the other run for the Red Sox, who had dropped three of four.

John Lackey went seven innings in the start and was charged with two runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Manny Delcarmen (3-2) got the win for throwing a flawless 11th inning.

Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz each had two hits and an RBI for the Rangers, who have lost five of seven. Cliff Lee made his second start in a Texas uniform and again went nine innings as he was charged with two runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Boston got on board in the first as McDonald hit a one-out double and came home when Ortiz followed with a single for a 1-0 lead.

Lee retired 11 straight batters before Mike Cameron doubled with one out in the fifth, but he was stranded there as Bill Hall struck out and Kevin Cash looked at strike three to end the inning.

Texas went ahead in the sixth inning. With two outs, Ian Kinsler kept the frame alive with a single and Vladimir Guerrero followed with a walk. Hamilton and Cruz then hit consecutive RBI singles for a 2-1 lead.

Lee set Boston down in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but the Red Sox rallied in the ninth inning to tie the game.

Scutaro led off with a single, moved to second on McDonald's sac bunt, went to third on Ortiz's groundout and then came home when Youkilis drilled a double to left.

Game Notes

Each team has won three times in the season series...C.J. Wilson takes the mound for Texas on Sunday and will be opposed by Jon Lester...Jonathan Papelbon tossed two perfect innings of relief for Boston.

Of Memphis’ five leading minute earners, the shortest of the bunch is 6’5”. Each team has a very effective defense; Memphis surrenders 62.3 PPG whereas the Buckeyes give up only 61 PPG. With those type of numbers, it isn’t surprising that Memphis covered the UNDER almost 69% of the time this season. As a favorite, OSU has covered the UNDER almost 66% of the time over the last three seasons. The major concern for Memphis which is magnifies this time of the year is their brutal foul shooting (62%). This season, OSU is 17-11 ATS versus teams with a winning record and 7-2 ATS in all tournament games. Memphis has been an extremely reliable cover in tournament play in recent years with a 23-8 ATS record over the last three seasons.

UCLA vs. Kansas

In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, UCLA will play in a role which they are very unfamiliar with that of the underdog. Only twice this season have they been getting points from the handicappers and both times they covered. Over the last three seasons UCLA is a reliable 23-7 ATS in this unfamiliar role. UCLA has not fared well against Big 12 opponents recently going 1-7 ATS since 1997. Giving up only 59.6 PPG, UCLA will definitely look to do what they do best: keep this game as low scoring as possible. Their defense has been especially tough during the tournament. UCLA opponents have been able to muster up only 48.7 PPG while shooting a combined 34.5% from the field. UCLA definitely has a challenge at hand with a Kansas team that is capable of putting points on the board in bunches. As a team, they average 79 PPG and shoot an impressive 49.6% from the field and 39.4% from beyond the arc. During the tournament Kansas has been “lights out” from the field having shot 56.2%.
